The Forest Stewardship Council is the only certification system that requires a consensus solution when conflicts arise between logging companies and indigenous communities.

Paper accounts for nearly 40% of the waste stream.

More than 140 publishers, including many of the world's largest, have strong environmental policies.

On average, it is estimated that the U.S. book industry uses less than 10% recycled fiber for its paper.

On average, it is estimated that the U.S. newsprint sector has a 35% recycled fiber use-rate.

Globally, over 40% of the industrial wood harvest is used to make paper.

Deforestation accounts for 25% of human caused C02 emissions.

When the goals set forth in the Book Industry Treatise on Responsible paper use are realized over 5 million trees will be preserved each year.

In 2006, an Opinion Research Corporation poll revealed that 80% of readers are willing to pay more for books printed on recycled and environmentally responsible paper.

Over the course of its lifecycle, postconsumer recycled fiber requires 30-40% less energy than virgin fiber.

Welcome to the Green Press Initiative Publisher Certification Application!

Before you begin this process it is important that you read the overview of the certification which is available at www.greenpressinitiative.org/documents/certification_overview.pdf

This overview will guide you through the different levels of certification as well as the various options within each certification level.

If you have already read the overview of the certification and know which level of certification you plan to apply for, as well as which option you plan to choose to obtain that level of certification you should continue with the application.

The first part of the application is actually a pre-application screening process. This step is optional but it only takes a few minutes and it will help you confirm if you meet the required benchmarks.

You may save your progress in the application at any time by checking the box that says “Save my progress and resume later”. In order to do this you will need to provide your email address and choose a password. To resume an application you have already started, simply come back to this web address and click “Resume a previously saved form”

Please note that your application will not be reviewed until the appropriate application fee has been paid.  Application fees are based on annual revenues and the fee scheduled can be viewed by going to the invoice available here.

Pre-Application Screen

You do not qualify for certification

Sorry, but based on the answers you have provided so far it appears that your company will not qualify for the Green Press Initiative publisher certification. It is recommended that you do not continue with the application.

Please get more information before continuing

Before continuing with the application it is recommended that you get more information from your paper suppliers.

At a minimum you will need information about the total amount of recycled fiber your company uses, the total amount of FSC certified paper your company uses, and the amount of virgin fiber that is certified to the FSC controlled wood standard.

Please note that many papers that are not FSC certified and many papers that are certified to SFI, CSA or PEFC standards are also certified to the FSC controlled wood standard.

Your suppliers should be able to help you figure out how much of each type of paper/fiber you used.

Documentation for Required Benchmarks

You are required to document that you meet the required benchmarks for the certification level and option you have selected.

In order to demonstrate compliance with the required benchmarks (and some elective benchmarks) you must download the spreadsheet available here (If you require an .xls file instead of a .xlsx file click here).

Please provide a copy of this spreadsheet to each company that has supplied your company with book paper (i.e. printers, brokers and/or paper manufacturers).

Information about tons of paper supplied, recycled content and FSC certification is required for every paper. Information about the bleaching is required if you are applying for credit from elective benchmark F. If possible have the supplier fill in information regarding the portion of virgin tree fiber that is certified to the controlled wood standard. If this information is not available to the supplier Green Press Initiative will attempt to verify it with the paper manufacturer.Once you have received copies of the spreadsheets back from each supplier you can upload them below.

If you are using papers that contain agricultural or alternative fiber you must upload a document describing what type of fiber is used. Any agricultural or alternative fiber, with the exception of fiber that is residue from food crops, will require a lifecycle analysis from an independent organization that demonstrates environmental benefits compared to using a comparable paper made from virgin tree fiber if it is to be applied towards elective benchmark J.

You may upload as many files as needed. If you need to upload more than 10 files click "Add More Files". Each time you click "Add More Files" an additional 10 lines will appear.
