Call for Responsible Paper in Textbooks
Textbooks are a foundation for learning throughout all grade
levels and paper is a key material which supports this process.
Given that the virtues of education are meant to cultivate
productive and responsible future citizens, it is logical that
the paper used in textbooks be produced with the utmost of
social and environmental integrity.
Please join other educational stakeholders in calling on
publishers of textbooks and other educational materials to
minimize their environmental and social impacts.

Additional Information:
This statement calls on textbook publishers to reduce
environmental and social impacts by maximizing their use of
post-consumer recycled and FSC certified fiber
Benefits of Recycled Fiber Using post-consumer recycled
fiber not only requires fewer trees, but is also reduce
the amount of paper that degrades in landfills. As paper
degrades, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas with 21 times the
heat trapping power of carbon dioxide. Each ton of recycled
fiber that replaces virgin fiber will conserve:
- 17 to 24 trees
- 2,208 to 3,206 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions
- 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of water
Benefits of FSC certified Fiber The Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) is widely accepted as the best-practice
standard for forest management and for certified forest products
such as wood or paper. The key principles which set FSC apart
from other forest certifications systems include:
- FSC ensures adequate protections for Endangered and High
Conservation Value Forests
- FSC ensures that biodiverse forests have not been and will
not be converted to plantations
- FSC adequately respects and integrates social concerns
including the rights of indigenous communities
- FSC significantly reduces clear-cut size and chemical use
